Nipple size is not static.
Hormonal changes, pumping frequency, and postpartum stage can cause nipple diameter to change over time. Many mothers benefit from having 1–2 backup sizes to rotate as needed.

Why Flange Fit Matters (Evidence-Based)
Research and updated clinical guidance show that incorrect flange sizing is one of the most common causes of pumping pain, nipple trauma, and reduced milk output.
A properly fitted flange can:
Improve milk flow and drainage
Reduce nipple friction, swelling, and blanching
Support long-term pumping comfort
Lower the risk of nipple damage and inflammation
💡 Updated evidence suggests that many pumping mothers benefit from smaller flange sizes than traditionally recommended, and nipple diameter, not areola size, is the key measurement.
To determine your flange size, measure only the mid-nipple diameter (do not include the areola), ideally after a pumping or feeding session. Your flange size may be:
Your exact nipple measurement, or
+1mm to +2mm, depending on comfort and nipple response during pumping

Complete Your Pumping Setup
-
A flange that is too large may pull excessive areola into the tunnel, leading to pain, nipple swelling, reduced milk flow, and inefficient pumping.
-
A flange that is too small can cause nipple rubbing, blanching, cracking, and restricted milk flow.
-
Yes. Many mothers naturally have different nipple sizes on each side and may require different flange sizes for comfort and effectiveness.
-
If using a food-grade lubricant such as coconut oil, wiping is not necessary. Always ensure the products used are safe for breastfeeding.
But of course, if you prefer, you still can gently wipe it away.
-
It’s recommended to reassess flange fit if you experience pain, notice changes in nipple appearance, or during different pumping stages (e.g. early postpartum vs. return to work).
