Mixed Feeding Consultation

Finding Your Perfect Feeding Balance: Balancing different feeding methods can bring up challenges

Mixed feeding can mean a few variations such as combining breastfeeding with bottle feeding, or breastfeeding with alternative milk

But even though it sounds straightforward, balancing different feeding methods can bring up challenges, from ensuring baby has the right latch and position to managing milk supply and dealing with the fatigue of juggling multiple approaches.

Types Of Support You Can Get

  • We’ll start by assessing your baby’s latch and positioning to make sure breastfeeding is comfortable for both of you.

Small tweaks here can lead to big changes in comfort and milk transfer.

  • Mixed feeding often means pumping, which can be tricky to navigate.

We’ll go through pumping effectiveness, so you can feel confident in your pumping experience.

  • We’ll dive into paced bottle feeding techniques and help you pick bottles that work well with breastfeeding, making it easier for your baby to switch between breast and bottle without confusion.

  • If you’re combining breast milk with formula, we’ll make sure you’re equipped with the tools to do so safely, ensuring your baby is satisfied and thriving without negatively impacting your milk supply.

  • One of the most common concerns with mixed feeding is maintaining milk supply.

We’ll go over evidence-based ways to monitor and boost supply, so you can keep your breastfeeding journey on track.

  • Parenting, especially in the early months, is demanding.

Many families feel they simply don’t have enough time, or are too exhausted to manage a balance of latching, pumping, and bottle feeding.

Together, we’ll develop a practical routine that works for you, designed to reduce stress and fit naturally into your daily life.

For Those Wishing to Ease into Fully Direct Latching

If your goal is to gradually move away from mixed feeding and focus on direct breastfeeding, this consultation will also touch on that if you desire.

I’ll guide you in finding ways to increase nursing sessions, reduce reliance on bottles, and optimize milk supply for a smoother transition to full breastfeeding.

Personalised for you.

Each consultation is tailored to meet the needs of you and your baby, providing compassionate, knowledgeable support every step of the way.

Whether you're just starting with mixed feeding or adjusting an existing routine, I’m here to help make feeding a more positive experience for everyone involved.

All consultations will include the following…

  • Understanding your individual journey is key to providing the best breastfeeding support. We'll discuss your and your baby's health history, including birth weight, feeding frequency, diaper output, and pumping/expressing habits.

If you've experienced any medical concerns, a difficult pregnancy or birth, or your baby has any health conditions, please share this openly with me.

This information is crucial for tailoring our support to your specific needs.

  • We might discuss the possibility of examining your breasts and nipples, especially if you're experiencing any discomfort.

This examination helps me to identify potential causes and recommend the best approach for healing and improving your comfort level.

  • The heart of a lactation consultation often involves watching you feed your baby.

This could be breastfeeding, or bottle-feeding, depending on your situation.

Many parents are surprised to learn that small adjustments in positioning and latch can significantly improve comfort and feeding efficiency for both you and your baby.

Don't hesitate to ask questions and get clarification on any new techniques – my goal is to empower you with the knowledge and skills for successful feeding, even after our visit!

  • After your baby finishes feeding and settles down (hopefully for a nap!) or pumping finishes, I will address any questions you have.

We'll discuss what worked well during the session and explore any adjustments that might further improve your breastfeeding / pumping experience.

Together, we'll develop a personalized plan for the coming days and discuss how we can stay connected to ensure your continued success.

Additionally, I can recommend and refer you to other healthcare professionals who could provide further support for you and your baby.

Remember, you're not alone in this journey!
