Personalised for you and baby
Every breastfeeding experience is a different one and what worked for one mother may not work for others. This Newborn Feeding Support will allow families to share their concerns, have mummy and baby assessed, including observation of a feeding session. A personalised infant-feeding care plan will be provided at the end of the consult.
When is the right time to book a session?
The earlier, the better!
You can book a Newborn Feeding Support session anytime between your third trimester and two months postpartum.
Some useful topics to expect during the consultation
Assessments*
*Assessments are ideally done during home-visits
There will be a series of assessments such as breast assessments, latching and feeding assessment. If mother needs to pump, there will be a pumping assessment as well. If latching isn’t going well, an oral assessment of your newborn will be done during the session.
Alternative feeding
If direct latching is not possible at the moment, depending on baby and mummy’s unique situation, you will get guidance on the other ways to feed your infant (e.g. syringe, cup, etc.).
Latching and positioning
During the session, you will get one to one dedicated guidance on practicing how to get a comfortable latch. This is also coupled with trying and finding a breastfeeding position that works best for you.
Treatments for mother
If required, there will be treatments to painful nipples such as sore, cracks or bleeding nipples. Blocked ducts and breast engorgement treatment will be included as well which consists of gentle massage, reverse pressure softening, lymphatic drainage and hand expression techniques.
Milk production and supply
Learn what is normal and abnormal milk supply. Understand the science behind milk production. You’ll also get a proposed care plan on how to go about managing your milk production and supply, depending on your situation.
Normal infant behaviours
Understand what is a normal newborn feeding pattern is like. Growth spurts. Cluster feeding. Fussy evenings, witching hour. How does a normal infant sleep look like. Learn how to recognise baby’s early hunger cues.
All consultations will include the following…
-
Understanding your individual journey is key to providing the best breastfeeding support. We'll discuss your and your baby's health history, including birth weight, feeding frequency, diaper output, and pumping/expressing habits.
If you've experienced any medical concerns, a difficult pregnancy or birth, or your baby has any health conditions, please share this openly with me.
This information is crucial for tailoring our support to your specific needs.
-
We might discuss the possibility of examining your breasts and nipples, especially if you're experiencing any discomfort.
This examination helps me to identify potential causes and recommend the best approach for healing and improving your comfort level.
-
The heart of a lactation consultation often involves watching you feed your baby.
This could be breastfeeding, or bottle-feeding, depending on your situation.
Many parents are surprised to learn that small adjustments in positioning and latch can significantly improve comfort and feeding efficiency for both you and your baby.
Don't hesitate to ask questions and get clarification on any new techniques – my goal is to empower you with the knowledge and skills for successful feeding, even after our visit!
-
After your baby finishes feeding and settles down (hopefully for a nap!), I will address any questions you have.
We'll discuss what worked well during the session and explore any adjustments that might further improve your breastfeeding experience.
Together, we'll develop a personalized plan for the coming days and discuss how we can stay connected to ensure your continued success.
Additionally, I can recommend and refer you to other healthcare professionals who could provide further support for you and your baby.
Remember, you're not alone in this journey!
