Breastfeeding baby with parent

Newborn Feeding Support

Feeding your newborn during the early days and weeks can be overwhelming. You don’t need to figure it out all alone.

Breastfeeding should be comfortable for both mummy and baby

If you experience any discomfort or have concerns about your newborn’s feeding, it’s important to get help from a Lactation Consultant as early as possible either in the hospital and/or when you’re back home.

Reasons to get help with feeding your newborn

  1. Latching issues: Newborn isn’t latching well or newborn refuses to latch.

  2. Premature newborn feeding challenges

  3. Unsure which breastfeeding position suits you

  4. Painful nipples and/or breasts

  5. Concerns around newborn’s jaundice condition

  6. Concerns over newborn’s weight loss/gain

  7. Suspect that newborn has a tongue and/or lip tie

  8. Unsettled newborn and frequent feeding

  9. Milk supply concerns

  10. Breasts are always full and hard - it’s painful

  11. Formula feeding guidance and concerns

And any other reasons that you need trained lactation help.

Personalised for you and baby

Every breastfeeding experience is a different one and what worked for one mother may not work for others. This Newborn Feeding Support will allow families to share their concerns, have mummy and baby assessed, including observation of a feeding session. A personalised infant-feeding care plan will be provided at the end of the consult.

Tender Loving Milk Mother and baby

When is the right time to book a session?

The earlier, the better!

You can book a Newborn Feeding Support session anytime between your third trimester and two months postpartum.

What will be covered

Assessments*

*Assessments are ideally done during home-visits

There will be a series of assessments such as breast assessments, latching and feeding assessment. If mother needs to pump, there will be a pumping assessment as well. If latching isn’t going well, an oral assessment of your newborn will be done during the session.

Alternative feeding

If direct latching is not possible at the moment, depending on baby and mummy’s unique situation, you will get guidance on the other ways to feed your infant (e.g. syringe, cup, etc.).

Latching and positioning

During the session, you will get one to one dedicated guidance on practicing how to get a comfortable latch. This is also coupled with trying and finding a breastfeeding position that works best for you.

Treatments for mother

If required, there will be treatments to painful nipples such as sore, cracks or bleeding nipples. Blocked ducts and breast engorgement treatment will be included as well which consists of gentle massage, reverse pressure softening, lymphatic drainage and hand expression techniques.

Milk production and supply

Learn what is normal and abnormal milk supply. Understand the science behind milk production. You’ll also get a proposed care plan on how to go about managing your milk production and supply, depending on your situation.

Normal infant behaviours

Understand what is a normal newborn feeding pattern is like. Growth spurts. Cluster feeding. Fussy evenings, witching hour. How does a normal infant sleep look like. Learn how to recognise baby’s early hunger cues.
