Tender Backflow Protectors for Spectra or Cimilre Breast Pumps (2-Piece Set)
These essential pump parts act as a barrier…
To prevent milk, moisture, and condensation from entering the tubing or motor, supporting both pump performance and milk safety.
Unboxing and first look
Each set includes 2 complete backflow protector units:
2 × Large Caps
2 × Small Caps
2 × Silicone Membranes
Everything you need for a full replacement or spare set.
Backflow protectors are a critical hygiene component of closed-system breast pumps. They:
Prevent milk from flowing into pump tubing
Reduce the risk of mold and bacterial growth
Protect the pump motor from moisture damage
Help maintain consistent suction and pump longevity
For pumping mums, this means safer milk, better pump performance, and peace of mind, especially when pumping multiple times a day.
Why Backflow Protectors Matter
Understanding Silicone Membrane Wear & Tear (Important for Pump Performance)
Silicone membranes are the most delicate and hardest-working part of a backflow protector. They play a key role in maintaining suction and creating an effective seal, which is why they are also the component most prone to wear and tear over time.
How long a silicone membrane lasts depends greatly on how it is handled and cared for, rather than just how often it is used.
-
Stretching or pulling forcefully during assembly or removal
Using fingernails or sharp edges to pry the membrane out
Twisting aggressively when disassembling
Washing with very hot water repeatedly
Using strong detergents, brushes, or UV sterilisation methods too frequently
Not fully air-drying before reassembly, causing the silicone to weaken over time
Even small micro-tears or loss of elasticity can affect suction without being immediately visible.
-
Noticeable drop in pump suction
Milk backing up into the backflow protector
Membrane looks stretched, warped, cloudy, or no longer sits flat
Pump sounds different during use
Replacing worn membranes promptly helps protect both your pump motor and milk supply.
-
Remove the membrane gently using the edges, avoid pulling from the centre
Wash with mild soap and lukewarm water
Avoid excessive rubbing or scrubbing
Air-dry fully on a clean towel before reassembling
Assemble slowly, ensuring the membrane sits flat without stretching
Handled with care, silicone membranes can maintain effective suction for longer and reduce the need for frequent replacement.
Spectra: S1+, S2+, 9+, M1
Spectra Dual: Dual S, Dual Compact
Cimilre, Hegen, Pumpables, Philip Avent (as long as the tubing can fit into this backflow protector, but at your own discretion to do your own pumping set-up)

Compatible Models
Important: Always verify compatibility with your pump model before use.
The connector that attaches to the Spectra breast shield is intentionally designed for a snug, secure fit.
Avoid forcing the connection too tightly
Gently twist and pull when removing to prevent damage
Wash with warm soapy water and air-dry thoroughly after use
Steam and UV sterilising are fine
Proper handling helps extend the lifespan of your pump parts.

Complete Your Pumping Setup
Choosing the right flange is important, but pain, low output, nipple trauma, or ongoing pumping struggles often need individualised assessment, not just a product change.
If you’re unsure about your flange size, experiencing discomfort, or want to optimise your pumping routine, professional support from an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) can make a meaningful difference.
Need Personalised Pumping Support?
1:1 Pumping Consultation (Dedicated & Individualised)
A 1:1 pumping consultation offers dedicated time and personalised assessment, making it the best option if you have specific concerns or ongoing challenges.
This option is recommended if you:
Are experiencing persistent pain, nipple trauma, or poor milk drainage
Have tried multiple flange sizes without improvement
Are exclusively pumping or pumping frequently
Want a deep, individualised pumping assessment
Are returning to work and need a tailored pumping plan
What makes 1:1 support different:
Extended, uninterrupted time focused solely on you
Detailed nipple and breast assessment
Individualised flange sizing and optimisation
Pump settings, rhythm, and suction troubleshooting
Personalised recommendations based on your goals, body, and lifestyle
Pumping 101 Workshop (Group-Based & Practical)
The Pumping 101 Workshop is a small group session designed to build strong foundations and confidence, especially for mothers who are new to pumping or preparing ahead.
What you can expect in the workshop:
Education on evidence-based flange sizing
Guidance on how to measure your nipple diameter correctly
Opportunity to try a few flange sizes (depending on the pump you bring)
Bring your own pump to check basic fit and comfort
Opportunity to try other pump brands, if you wish, during the session
Best suited for mothers who:
Want to understand pumping before committing to multiple parts
Are preparing to pump at work
Prefer learning in a supportive group environment
Do not currently have complex pain or pumping issues
Not Sure Which Option to Choose?
Choose 1:1 support if you want dedicated time or have ongoing discomfort or complex concerns.
Choose the Pumping 101 Workshop if you want education, hands-on learning, and to explore flange options in a group setting.
Many mothers start with the Pumping 101 Workshop and later book a 1:1 consultation if deeper support is needed.

These backflow protectors are designed and tested for Spectra and Cimilre breast pumps.
However, from a functional standpoint, a backflow protector can technically work with any breast pump as long as the pump tubing fits securely onto the backflow protector and an airtight seal can be achieved.
That said, using these parts with pumps outside the listed compatible models would be considered a personal pumping “hack” setup. This means:
Fit and suction may vary depending on the pump and tubing used
Performance cannot be guaranteed outside recommended models
The user assumes responsibility for ensuring proper fit, hygiene, and function
If you are experimenting with a customised pump setup, ensure there is:
No air leakage
No milk backflow into the tubing
Stable and comfortable suction during pumping
IBCLC note: If you notice reduced suction, unusual pump sounds, or milk entering the tubing, discontinue use and return to a standard, manufacturer-recommended configuration.
-
Yes. They are designed to fit standard Spectra-style flanges, including Maymom and Tender flanges.
-
Replace if you notice reduced suction, visible wear, or moisture entering the tubing.
Exclusive pumpers: 3 months
Moderate pumpers: 6 months
Many mums keep a spare set for convenience.
-
Yes. All components are BPA-free and suitable for use in breast pump systems.
