Understanding the Difference: Lactation Counselor vs. IBCLC
Navigating the world of breastfeeding support can be overwhelming, especially when you stumble upon titles like "Lactation Counselor", “Lactation Consultant”, “Lactation Specialist” and "International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)."
While all of those professionals aim to help mothers on their breastfeeding journeys, understanding their distinct roles and qualifications can guide you in choosing the right support for your needs.
First and foremost, the title “Lactation Consultant” is not a regulated title. Anyone can use that title for themselves with or without formal training. Therefore, do note on what training the Lactation Consultant whom you engage has, and see if it supports what you need as a breastfeeding mother.
Lactation Counselor / Consultant:
Qualifications: Training varies, but typically involves shorter courses (20-100 hours) that cover breastfeeding basics, latching, pumping, and common challenges.
Scope of Practice: Can provide general breastfeeding support, education, and resources. May offer guidance on latching, positioning, and basic troubleshooting.
Most common training institutions: Lactation Education Resources, Health E-Learning, Childbirth International, GOLD Lactation Academy
International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC):
Qualifications: Holds a globally recognized certification after completing rigorous training, clocking 500 to 1,000 clinical hours, and passing an extensive exam. Requires ongoing continuing education credits to maintain certification.
International Credentialing Body: All IBCLCs obtained their international board certification from IBLCE®, or the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners®. IBCLE is an international credentialing body whose mission is to serve the global public interest by advancing professional practice in lactation consultation and support through credentialing.
Verifying IBCLCs: You can use this public IBCLC Certification registry to verify the credential of any IBCLCs. For example, you can search my name “eliza koo” and you’ll see more information including the Credential Expiration Date:
Scope of Practice: Offers comprehensive breastfeeding support, including complex challenges, prematurity, medical conditions, and multiple births. Can assess (in accordance to IBCLE guidelines) and provide interventions for lactation difficulties.
Autonomy: Can work independently and collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
Which one is right for you?
Consider your specific needs and challenges:
For basic support and education: A lactation counselor/specialist might be a good starting point, especially if you are experiencing straightforward challenges.
For complex issues or medical concerns: Consulting an IBCLC is highly recommended. Their advanced knowledge and skills can provide expert guidance for overcoming more intricate breastfeeding difficulties.
Remember: Both lactation counselors and IBCLCs play vital roles in supporting breastfeeding mothers. Choosing the right professional depends on your unique needs and circumstances. Don't hesitate to reach out and discuss your concerns to find the best person to support your breastfeeding journey.
Here are some additional tips:
Speak to your breastfeeding-friendly healthcare provider for recommendations.
Ask friends and family for referrals.
Interview potential providers to ensure they understand your needs and can answer your questions confidently.
With the right support and knowledge, you can breastfeed with confidence and you will not feel so alone in your lactating journey!
