As amazing as they are, they also have needs and wants. And if you are reading this article, it seems that you are probably someone who wants to help them. Thank you for that!

So, what’s next? What can you do to show your love and support for this wonderful milk-making mama? Read on to learn 5 things you can do to actually support a breastfeeding mum!

  1. Words of Encouragement!
SO underestimated. Breastfeeding is a journey with ups and downs. As exciting as the “ups” are, the downs can be lonely and confusing. Remind this mum of her strength and let her know that she is doing a great job. Here are some examples of meaningful things to say:

“You are so loved! I love seeing the connection between you and your little one grow.”

“It is so exciting to watch you come into your role as a new mum.”

“Your baby is so lucky to have you.”

  2. Listen to her!
As mentioned earlier, breastfeeding can be lonely at times! Even if you do not quite understand the ins and outs of breastfeeding, being a responsive listener will mean so much to your breastfeeding friend! So many tasks in motherhood are unrecognized, so any opportunity for a mum to feel seen is both valuable and validating!

  3. Make her a snack basket!
With breastfeeding comes an impressive new appetite! Not only is a snack basket something physical that you can give, but it is also something that will be used! Here are some ideas of things to include:

    • Fruits (both fresh and dried!)

    • Nuts (homemade trail mix is always fun!)

    • Charcuterie items (cheese and crackers, deli meats)

    • Sweet treats (hello, dark chocolate and yummy lactation bakes)

    • Red date (+longan) drink for mummies during confinement would be helpful

    • A water bottle (her thirst has increased too!)

  4. Take over her household chores!
As much as you may want to hold the baby so that mum can complete household chores, the breastfeeding baby likely wants no one but his/her mum! Helping with tasks like dishes, sweeping, organizing, and tidying may be just what this mum needs to feel regulated again.

  5. Entertain her other children!
This may not apply to every mother, but to those that it does, it makes a world of difference! It can be so challenging to find time to sit and quietly breastfeed your baby when you have two other little ones battling for your attention. So, relieve mum of that battle! Give this mum the peace and quiet to soak in this amazing experience with her baby, she will thank you for it!
